Kyary Pamyu Pamyu – PONPONPON (Translation)

Maybe at that cross walk, you all will start skipping
And maybe you’ll join hands and stare at the sky in the towns center
Maybe in this town, you can grasp that chance anywhere
I have no choice but to move forward, it’s too early for tears! No! No!

Why don’t we all just pon pon!
Isn’t it boring not to? There’s no reason!
I put on my headphones and bounce to the rhythm
Come my way way, down my path

Pon pon! Go ahead, all these various things
Can you hear it? Your emotions are heightening
Poi poi! Where are the bad people? Just push them aside
Yes, now, let us go. Aah you make me happy.

Everyday pon, everytime is pon
I want to ride a merry-go-round
Everyday pon, everytime pon
But maybe that isn’t a good idea

Why don’t we all just pon pon!
Isn’t it boring not to? There’s no reason!
I put on my headphones and bounce to the rhythm
Come my way way, down my path

Pon pon way way way pon pon way pon way pon pon

Maybe at that cross walk, you all will start skipping
And maybe you’ll join hands and stare at the sky in the towns center
Maybe in this town, you can grasp that chance anywhere
I have no choice but to move forward, it’s too early for tears! No! No!

Pon pon! Advance, all these various things
Can you hear it? Your emotions are heightening
Poi poi! Where are the bad people? Just push them aside
Yes, now, let us go. Aah you make me happy.

Everyday pon, everytime pon
I want to ride a merry-go-round
Everyday pon, everytime pon
Maybe it’s really not so bad

Pon pon way way way pon pon way pon way pon pon
Way way pon pon pon way way pon way pon way way

  7. Paul says:

Well that takes care of the literal translation. What did it really mean? Or was it just random?

  8. Amber says:

Pon is the Japanese word for “Clap” if that makes things clearer for people

  9. Tessa says:

my friend showed me this song telling me that i would be kinda scared but addicted at the same time.. thats exactly how i felt xD. now that i can see the english lyrics, i think this song is basically about just being who you are and having fun; who cares what other people think. enjoy life while youre young, because before you know it you wont have that option anymore. :)

  10. Sarah says:

Hahahaha I love this song an video and the lyrics just make it better thx! :33

  11. Snax says:

Why does she barf crows and eyeballs and then later poot rainbows?
    Great song!!!

    • Wei says:

Because that is simply what magical girls do! Haha, naw, I don’t know, that’s a good question. It could have symbolism attached to it. To “eat crow” is an expression that means to go back on one’s word, though I don’t imagine Japanese would know that, so I should think in terms of their concepts. Crows are associated with tengu in Japan. There are two main types of tengu: one of them is a long-nosed humanoid who is very arrogant, the other is the crow tengu that isn’t as smart, though it can still be tricky. Both the crows and the eyeball could be commentary on the characteristics of what she says. What you called rainbows looks more like streamers, or a pattern decoration… which leaves me at a loss. However, it could all just be random. Though, they could have something to do with pop culture, since she makes references to Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura and maybe Revolutionary Girl Utena.
I’m addicted to the song, too. :D

    • Someone says:

The music video for “PonPonPon” was shot by Jun Tajima. The theme of the music video is “kawaii”, which means cute in Japanese. Tajima regarded Kyary as a person bending the definition of “kawaii” by mixing it with weirdness. The art director Masuda Sebastian, of fashion brand 6%DOKIDOKI, adopted the randomness of “a room of a girl who isn’t good at tidying up”, adding “a taste of the 60-70s”.

The video starts with a microphone stand coming out of Kyary’s ear. The microphone stand is used to imitate the image of Freddie Mercury.

In the meaningless, repetitive chorus, “Pon Pon Way Way Way Pon Pon Way Pon Way Pon Pon”, Kyary performs a dance choreographed by air:man with the lyrics inserted as kinetic typography

Kinetic typography—the technical name for “moving text”—is an animation technique mixing motion and text to express ideas using video animation. This text is presented over time in a manner intended to convey or evoke a particular idea or emotion

  16. precious may says:

whats the meaning of ponponpon in english ?

  17. Steph says:

First time I listened to kyary was last night (this song and candy), and I don’t think the lyrics are hard to understand. Everything is pretty self explanatory. She didn’t think riding a merry go round was a good idea because her head is already going in circles, then later in the song she decides it’s best to be yourself and do what you want. Even in the video things are frequently going in circles.

  18. SeeU says:

Ever heard Miku Hatsunes version? I adore it, but of course, i also like the original. If You think the video’s wierd, Youve clearly never séen Hausu, Eraserhead or Un Chien Andalou

  19. Magikarp says:

Pon means Bread and is also the Japanese onomonopia for clapping

    • No, ‘pan’ is bread in Japanese…as well as Spanish, but you get my point.

‘Wei Wei’ is the name of her blog and the writer of the lyrics used ‘Pon Pon’ because it sounded like Kyary speak.

  20. Nicholas O'Muffin says:

Love this song and it’s nonsensical lyrics.

  21. Anonymous says:

Wow! this translation helps, but i still have no idea what it means. :l

  22. Anonymous says:

    Pan means bread not pon

  23. Little Monster says:

It’s lady gaga mixed with K-Pop

I love this song, it’s really cute to me

  42. Windy says:

“Pom pom” roughly translates to “bop, bop”, if that helps anyone. It’s the kind of characteristically Japanese onomatopoeia that can be tricky for non-native speakers to figure out.
